MotivationMotivation in an EFL classroom can be very challenging. The teacher has to motivate students who are not native english speakers. Motivating english speaking students, in general, is tough. Motivation is essential for students who want to succeed as an english speaker and there are many ways to promote motivation in the classroom. Because students in non-english speaking countries rarely have opportunities to interact with native english speakers so the lack of motivation needs to come in other ways. As a teacher it should be first and foremost to motivate students and the rest will follow. ?As teachers, we often forget that all of our learning activities are filtered through our students? motivation. In this sense, students control the flow of the classroom. Without student motivation, there is no pulse, there is no life in the class? (Rost,M., 2006). Depending on the age many students do not want to learn english and are forced to go by their parents. It can be very difficult to stay positive and keep the students positive as well. The classes at age group of students range from 8 years old to 16 years old. I think lack of motivation of students ranges all ages and levels but I think many students lack the motivation because of their age, lack of confidence, and genuine interest in the language. Older students are usually more motivated because of personal or professional goals. It is still important to keep motivating older students so they continue to pursue future goals. According to some previous research, there are ways a teacher can create basic motivational conditions. They include appropriate teacher behavior, good teacher-student rapport, a pleasant and supportive atmosphere, and having a cohesive learning group.Othersinclude giving proper instructions, teaching relevant material, being a caring teacher, and being outgoing and energetic. As at a teacher it is important to build a rapport with the students and get to know students on a certain level so there is mutual trust and respect in the classroom. Also, enthusiastic teachers should convey a commitment to and interest in the subject matter. This allows students to take cues on how to behave in class. A tense classroom can cause a lot of issues. Students will not feel safe or confident to participate. It is important to be outgoing and pleasant atmosphere. This will allow students to feel more comfortable and will be able to feel at ease in activities and discussions. If the teacher is outgoing and friendly, students will generally act in a similar manner. A good idea to create a good cohesive group is have students get to know each other and share interests. Some groups that aren?t uncooperative can become a situation in which learning isn?t taking place. In that case, create groups that manage well together and work together as teams. In all, the classroom should be able to work well together as a class. It may not happen every day but it should be a regular practice In the EFL environment it is important to give clear and concise instructions so students will understand what is being asked of them. If students understand directions and are able to carry out tasks it will build their confidence. Giving concise instructions will also give students the confidence to actually try. Many students do not want to participate in discussions or activities and part of the reason could be they don?t understand what is being asked of them. Caring is such an important quality of teacher. It makes students feel important, safe, and confident in the classroom setting. Being a caring teacher will give students motivation to want to do well. Teachers should be kind and patient when students do not understand an idea, a word, or a direction. Patience will help students trust the teacher more. There are so many things a teacher can do to motivate students. Overall, I think a teacher should be positive, outgoing, kind, patient, enthusiastic, and knowledgeable about the subject matter. These qualities can be seen and heard by the students and there will be positive responses and reactions from students. Teachers also can motivate students by talking to them; helping them individually and making them feel like they are important. All these qualities and characteristics are important to me as a teacher.
