Motivating StudentsThe ability to motivate students is one of the cornerstones of the teaching process when a student is correctly motivated they become more engaged and receptive to the learning process while an unmotivated student will be resistant to learning and may in fact hinder other students ability to learn. Therefore it is of the upmost importance for a teacher to find ways to positively motivate their students if they wish to teach successfully. If a student cannot understand how to follow an instruction or what is actually being taught they will fall behind and quickly lose the motivation to learn so it is essential in all areas of the lesson that time is taken to explain all information and tasks clearly. There are several ways in which a teacher can motivate their students, firstly by showing the student how the lesson is relevant to them this is often done at the beginning of the lesson by creating a situation or activity (engage stage) in which the new language maybe used and then gentling guiding the student?s response to provide the necessary information for the lesson from their own knowledge this encourages the student to participate in the lesson and focus on the topic at hand. When teaching it is important to chose your lesson material carefully always try to find common points of interest and incorporate them into your lesson, for example if your student(s) were professionals who were studying english to improve their business prospects. It might be a good idea to use business situations in your lessons but if you were to use the same situations for a child student you would quickly find them losing interest. Children get bored easily if they just have to sit and listen, they need frequent changes of activities which are fun, and exciting materials to keep them motivated. A teacher must always take the student(s) age, culture, interests, ability and background into account when forming lessons. Lessons that include language that is related to student?s lives, feelings and interests will always be of more interest to the student and help to build motivation to learn. Try to encourage students to use english by providing them with praise and positive reinforcement when they do something correctly also make sure that you constantly provide them with constructive feedback on how they can improve but always keep in mind no one likes to be wrong, so it is essential that all corrections are done under a positive light otherwise students will retreat into their shell and lose their motivation to participate in the lesson. Games, group work and friendly competitions are another way in which a teacher can spark student?s motivation as they are often more fun than just listening and provide a way in which the students can be involved with others and participate in activities without feel pressured. Try to set realistic goals and targets for the student(s) Failure to attain unrealistic goals frustrate and disappoint students. Encourage students to focus on their continued improvement, not just on one test or assignment. Help students evaluate their progress by encouraging them to critique their own work, analyze their strengths, and work on their weaknesses. Positive reinforcement and showing a genuine interest in your students from the beginning is fundamental. Carefully plan a lesson that has , relative, interesting topics and materials for each and every class, also try to make your own ideas and small changes in each lesson this will keep the students motivated to learn and achieve their goals.
