The receptive skills are reading and listening and they are both equally important. We read and listen either for a purpose or for entertainment. Readers and listeners use a number of skills such as: predictive skills, scanning, skimming (getting general idea), getting detailed information, deducing from context. There may be a number of problems in the process of teaching: difficult language (this problem can be approached by pre-teaching vocabulary and careful selection of texts), topics (they should be interesting) and tasks (there should be comprehension tasks that not just check understanding, but promote it).
