Conditionals can be tricky because the tense and form of the conditional depends on the possibility of the accompanying action. It would be difficult to explain to students how the first and second conditionals differ, as well as how the third and mixed conditionals differ, and hence why the verb forms used in the accompanying clause would be different. In addition, reported speech is also an added difficulty because students may not be able to visualise the time line, especially if their native language does not have strong time concepts. This might make it difficult for students to decide how to change the various tenses when changing direct speech to reported speech.
