This unit explored the teacher-student relationship and the aspects of both a good teacher and a good learner. The roles of a teacher were discussed, including prompter, facilitator, manager, model and assessor. The most appropriate role for the teacher is complex and dependent on the specific context of the situation. Differences between young and older learners were explored as they related to the role of the teacher. Cultural elements of the classroom were briefly discussed; for example, students in Southeast Asia are typically very respectful and may not speak unless spoken to. Levels of skill in the English language were also explored from beginner to advanced.
