Teaching vocabulary is far simpler when teaching at lower levels. Students at these levels usually haven't been exposed to as many words, and therefore a vocabulary lesson always teaches some words. Even if the students already know most of the words, especially simple ones, there will always be something new. At higher levels, however, only the students with more difficulties, or less practice, learn new words every lesson. Higher level students are characterized by their depth of vocabulary, and so perhaps their acquiring of new vocabulary in class happens more by chance. If this is so, the stronger students may feel disheartened, because they don't feel much progress.
