In this first unit the subject matter introduces the teacher to basic categories or characteristics of the learner and the teacher. The categories for the teacher reviews the different roles a teacher plays in the classroom and why they are important. The characteristics of the student help the teacher understand the differences in age, culture, experience, behavior and motivation, which help prepare the teacher for experience in the classroom. Additionally, the language levels are introduced, both as the general categories (e.g. beginner, intermediate, advanced) and the levels recently developed by the Council of Europe (e.g. Breakthrough, Waystage, Threshold, etc.).
