Unit 12 focused on the Productive skills of Speaking and Writing. While extremely important in the successful production of language, both require skill and a lot of practice before they can be freely used by the students. Although this chapter suggested that speaking would come more naturally to most language students and that writing is often neglected I have found my experience to be the opposite. Most students of the country in which I am teaching are proficient and confident writers, but are often lacking motivation and confidence in any kind of speaking output. Reading a scenario in which getting a student to speak is NOT like pulling teeth was a pleasant surprise.
