This unit discusses the basics of reading and listening, the two receptive skills. We read and listen to either get information or for entertainment. When preparing a reading/listening lesson plan for students, it is important to pay attention to the vocabulary in the piece. While this is a good way to introduce students to new words, it should not contain too many new or difficult words as this may confuse them, demotivate them and they are likely to not understand the meaning of the text or recording. It is useful to use authentic pieces to assist with the fluency of the language but be wary of the level of the students. Authentic pieces may be difficult for beginners.
