In this unit, I learned that course books can be divisive, with some using them more than others, but all teachers may have to create their own materials to supplement the textbook or to fit the needs of their learners. Authentic materials can be more interesting because they are real, but they should be carefully chosen because they are not graded. Teachers may create materials such as role-play cards, crosswords and picture stories. The advantages of course books are that it provides a syllabus, provides continuity and tried and tested materials. On the other hand, overuse of the book can make lessons boring, it may not suit the learners' needs, and they may be outdated.
