This unit is about using coursebooks and materials in a classroom. The content covers materials that can be used in a classroom and their advantages and disadvantages. Materials can be divided into 2 groups: authentic materials and created materials. Authentic materials like newspapers, brochures, films, etc. are real content so they are more interesting and students tend to value them more. However, they are not designed for EFL students and not graded for language level so the teacher should select them carefully. Created materials like flashcards, role-play cards, crosswords, picture stories, etc. are created to be used in a classroom so they can be adapted to the needs of the students and can be targeted to specific teaching aims. The teacher should have a good balance of using authentic materials and created materials in a classroom.
