It was no surprise to me that this unit downplayed the benefits of using a text book and emphasized the benefits of developing one’s own curriculum, syllabus, and materials. This is a common theme among TESOL/TEFL instructors in my experience. However, having worked for a number of years in a school that chose the textbook and required the teachers to use them, I have to say that the advantages of having a textbook around which the syllabus is organized much outweighed the disadvantages in my mind (even though I was a skeptic at first). It is true that I had to guard against the temptation to be lazy and just follow the text, but it gave the students a very clear idea of where the class was headed and they had the security of knowing that the goals for the course were set according to a nation-wide standard (not just their instructor’s whims).
