Unit 14 explains the use of course books and materials while teaching English and goes into the relative advantages and disadvantages . Materials can be Authentic or Created. What we mean by authentic materials is: magazines, newspapers, songs, brochures, menus, film on videos etc. Whereas the most common created materials are : crosswords, word search puzzles, role-play cards, flash cards, gap fill activities and others. Referring to course books they usually consist of a set of materials : students book for classroom use, workbook for class work and home work, recorded materials for use for class and at home, teachers book with grammar explanation, optional activities and so on. There are also other materials such as graded reading books, video activities, dictionaries, vocabulary flash cards etc... If the teacher is fortunate enough to be able to choose course books for his/her students, he/she should consider the following factors: Price and Availability are very important. A high price might put the books out of range for some of your students. Methodology must be suitable for use with ESA. We should look at an attractive design, what skills are covered, syllabus and the topics. Obviously the levels should be suitable for the students. Materials such as recordings should be readily replicable. In any case it's important for teachers to choose course books as suitable as possible for the level of each class. However when teaching we can consider whether to omit, replace, supplement or adapt lessons to match the student's needs and keep lessons balanced and interesting.
