The use of conditional sentence is very challenging because of its various forms and can sometimes be mixed up. In this case, the presence of tenses from simple tense to present perfect has to be memorized by each student. I remember one of my students from Portugal who was having so much difficulty understanding this grammar. The reported speech is better used with ask,tell and say. This is simpler explained than having to add other complex tenses such as present/past continuous or present/past perfect and so on. Overall, the study of this grammar has to be carefully studied and explained not only by students but teachers as well.
