This section covers some of the more advanced types of verbs, which are modal auxiliary verbs and transitive/intransitive verbs, as well as covering the passive voice. Modal auxiliary verbs are used in addition to a main verb to add meaning to the action. These include verbs like can, could, should, and may, and are used for expressing probabilities, necessities, and for requests. Phrasal verbs are classified as transitive or intransitive, depending on whether or not they take a direct object. The passive voice is where an action is described as having happened or is happening to something. This is contrast to the more common active voice, where the object acts on a subject.
