The Unit discussed ways of evaluating students' language proficiency level, focussing on tests that can be used at various times for different purposes. Assessment is a critical part of the teaching-learning process. Given at the start of a course, it helps teachers to know students' language capabilities and so prepare appropriately to suit their needs. When testing is done during or at the end of a course, teachers and students learn what progress has been made. Ideally, assessment should cover speaking, reading, writing and listening skills as they provide a more accurate indication of students' competence as language users than tests that do not include all four skills.
