In this unit, we learned the fundamentals of phonology. We learned about places as opposed to means of articulation. We learned about intonation and some ideas for teaching intonation. We learned about word stress and accent. We learned about ways to discuss some of the complexities and ambiguities of English pronunciation in fun ways. We covered a brief explanation of the International Phonetic Alphabet. One problem I had with this lesson's application of the IPA was that, in its use of modern British English as model, it seemed to conflate the open-mid front unrounded vowel (/?/) with the close-mid front unrounded (/e/); indeed, the former was never even introduced at all.
