This section highlights the different types of examinations and their purposes for teachers and students. A placement test is done at the beginning of an ESL course, and is used to determine what English skill level the student has, in order to place them in the proper level course. Similarly, a diagnostic test is given at the beginning of a course, to determine what the student already knows, and what they still need to learn and improve on. External exams are those given by certification organizations, whose purpose is to certify a learner's proficiency level for college or job readiness purposes. Practice exams modeled on the external exams may be given during an ESL course.
