This unit gives a macro-level overview of teaching new language, broken down into three main sections: vocabulary, grammatical structures, and language functions. Often, these three types of language learning can occur in a single class. For each function, the materials provide in-depth sample lesson plan, as well as more general ideas for the Engage, Study, and Activate phases of a given lesson plan. The discussion of how to choose vocabulary is helpful, as often new words are the building blocks of a lesson. I hope to develop stronger pedagogical knowledge of how to weave these three areas of new language learning, so that I can most effectively structure longer lesson blocks.
