The two receptive skills are reading and listening. We can use those skills in different ways. For example,we can only notice specific information we are interested in while reading the newspaper. We also could read an article only to get a general idea of its content. We could also listen to information in detail, like after asking someone for directions to get somewhere. It is important to choose well the authentic or non-authentic texts we use with students. The material should not be too easy nor too hard.Teachers should find out what interests the students to use material they like and will be more enthusiastic about learning. Pre-teaching difficult vocabulary is important.
