Teach English in Zhoupo Zhen - Shaoguan Shi
Unit 1 describes qualities of a good teacher and learner, roles of the instructor, coping with students of all ages, levels, and cultural backgrounds, as well as motivation for learning ESL/EFL. First of all, as a teacher, it is important to be enthusiastic about teaching, patient with one's students, and build good rapport with his/her students. A good teacher should take on various roles such as manager, organizer, assessor, prompter, participant, tutor, resource, model, and observer. Yet, it is important to balance these roles based on the activity itself and the goal of the lesson. Good learners should listen, be open to new approaches, ask questions, and make conscious efforts to correct their mistakes when given error corrections. Furthermore, age can greatly affect language learning. Young learners may have a short attention span, so it is important to keep lessons interactive, fun, and engaging (Ex: doing games and activities). On the other hand, adults may have a difficult time correcting \"fossilized mistakes\" that they've made over the years. It is important to continuously remind them to fix those mistakes, while still encouraging them and not making them \"lose face\" or become too embarrassed. Lastly, motivation for all-aged English learners might include wanting to travel, go abroad as an expatriate, communicate with friends and colleagues, as well in interest in foreign languages. All in all, it is important to keep these factors in mind while teaching and most importantly, keep the learner in mind above all else.
