Conditional sentences contain a condition (if-clause) and a consequence (mail clause). There are four main types of conditional sentences: 1. ZERO CONDITIONAL - Form: if + present tense, present tense - Usage: general truths 2. FIRST CONDITIONAL - Form: if + present tense, will + infinitive - Usage: real situations in the future (possible) 3. SECOND CONDITIONAL - Form: if + past tense, would + infinitive - Usage: present or future unreal hypothetical situation 4. THIRD CONDITIONAL - Form: if + past perfect, would have + past participle - Usage: hypothetical past situation/action MIXED CONDITIONAL ? if + past perfect, would + infinitive When concerting direct speech into reported speech, some changes should be made: 1. Tense - Present simple/continuous ? past simple/continuous - Present perfect simple/continuous ? past perfect simple/continuous - Past simple/continuous ? past perfect simple/continuous - Will ? would - Past perfect simple/continuous ? remain the same 2. Pronouns - e.g. he/she ? him/her, this ? that, etc. 3. Time expressions - e.g. yesterday ? the previous day, tomorrow ? the following/next day, etc. What I?ve found the most useful in this Unit are teaching ideas. What a question, Nuclear bunker role play, What would happen if? (conditionals) and media interviews (reported speech) represent tasks which can refresh usual and predictable grammar lesson because the students learns through fun activities which connect grammar with interesting, every-day topics.
