Teach English in Yaotian Zhen - Shaoguan Shi
In conclusion, this unit is around teaching productive skills: speaking and writing. For the activities in class, we put accuracy activities in study phase while we put fluency activities in activate phase. Both of them are equally important. Speaking activities in the classroom include controlled activities, guided activities and creative communication. For the controlled activities, drilling and prompting are often used. Students should focus on language accuracy in these activities. However, in those creative communications, students should pay attention to language fluency and creativeness. We often use free role-play and information gap games. Sometimes students are reluctant to speak in the class because they are lack of confidence or fear of making mistakes. Some techniques we can use to encourage students are pair work and group work, many controlled or guided activities before fluency activities. We need to give students enough time to think and prepare for creative communications. We also need to monitor the activity but had better not interrupt except to provide help. After the activity, we need to give feedback but don't have to over correct. For writing skills, we often focus on handwriting, spelling, layout and punctuation, and creative writing. We can design some interesting games in the activities to let students engage themselves in the class. No matter what topic we teach in speaking and writing classes, an ESA teaching plan plays an important role and it can help us to make classes more interesting and motivating.
