Unit 19 is a unit on teaching special groups. First we start with beginners, when teaching beginners it is important to determine first the level of English language that they know. There are different levels of beginners. There are those who have never sat in an English lesson, and yet there are others who might have been exposed to the language and can produce simple structures. Next in the category of special groups are the individual students where the teacher has a one on one English lesson with a student. The teacher should be aware of the suitable activities for such lessons. Children are the next category of special groups. The way a children's lesson is handled is not the same way that adult beginners are handled. Children require a lot of attention, they also require the teacher to get down to their level which is not the same for other classes. So a children's class is quite unique. The next category of special groups are the Business people who study English for Special Purposes. These don't study everything, they only study what they are going to use the language for. For example one Business Student might be going to host an English speaking client and he or she needs ideas on how to engage someone. There are monolingual and multilingual students which fall into another group. Multilingual students usually have different mother tongues and are only joined by the only means of communication which is English. The monolinguals are usually from one country of origin and can also communicate in English during the lessons.
