Unit Five covered the basics of lesson planning, including the benefits of lesson planning and the parts each lesson plan should include. Lesson planning is a great tool to plan, to help guide the lesson while allowing for flexibility, and to create a record of what each class has included. It's also very important to check that everything works and be completely prepared before each class. Each lesson plan should include learner objectives, personal aims, language point, teaching aids, anticipated problems and solutions, procedure, phase, timing, interaction, class level, number of students, date and time, and teacher's and observer's names. The unit then provided examples of different lesson plans, including one on animal vocabulary and verbs and present perfect simple tense at different levels. I really appreciated learning about different styles of lesson plans and the blank lesson plan outline that was provided. I have a tendency to scrawl down very minimal lesson plans, which usually work, but when faced with difficulties or differences in timing, I often get stuck. I learned that one should try to stick to a lesson plan but also allow for flexibility depending on timing, student engagement, and a variety of other factors because that flexibility allows you to adjust the lesson to enable the students to learn more or spend more time on a certain section. I also learned that lessons can take a variety of shapes and that changing or adding an activity can really benefit both students and teachers when it comes to language learning.
