Teach English in Wujing Zhen - Shaoguan Shi
In this unit, I have learned about productive (speaking and writing) and receptive (reading and listening) skills and how to structure well-balanced lesson plans that allow students to build their confidence in receptive skills specifically. There are two broad reasons for reading and listening: reading and listening for entertainment and for a purpose, and sometimes reading and listening are performed for a mix of the two aforementioned motives. There are different \"specialist\" skills that we use when reading and listening, which include predicting content from certain information (like a headline), scanning through content for specific information, skimming content for the general gist, deducing meaning by looking beyond the literal and examining context, and reading and listening for detailed information. I have also learned that it may be helpful to pre-teach students any problematic vocabulary and language structures that they may not know, although they should be allowed to work out the meaning and structures of elements that are at their level in order to build their confidence in their receptive skills. For beginners and students with low ESL ability, non-authentic texts designed for their skill level should be used in class, but higher level students can benefit from reading authentic texts designed for native English speakers. Furthermore, a variety of topics should be used over time in lesson plan sequences so that the interests of all students can be catered to and topics are well-balanced in the favor of multiple students.
