Unit 9 focused on Lesson Planning. While experienced teachers might be able to enter a classroom and execute a lesson with great precision, inexperienced teacher would feel exasperated and sorely lack confidence at the start and all throughout the classroom experience. Such teachers, if not guided, would leave this rewarding profession. As a teacher, I am already aware that lesson plans serve to aid in planning, helps keep me on target with the objectives and make adjustments as necessary, serve as a record of what I have done with my students--I do make a note of what worked and what did not, and recommendations/reflections. I know too that different schools require different formats for a lesson plan, so any teacher needs to keep abreast of the school system's requirements. The lesson plan ought to be simple; a substitute teacher who knows nothing about you as a teacher should be able to follow the lesson plan. It is extremely important that a teacher, no matter her years in teaching, have the materials for each lesson together. When I taught First grade, materials for each lesson were separated by months in a plastic storage container and labelled. Inside each container, lesson plans for each school day were separated into folders with accompanying worksheets and booklets the children were to create, and the teaching aids and props. The spark of excitement for the learning environment can immediately be put out when the teacher is spending so much time hunting for this or that. Disciplinary problems quickly arise from all this.
