Unit 9 was related to lesson planning. Lesson planning can be different for each instructor in terms of jotting down some notes or having a complex typed-up plan; however, all lesson plans should have these factors in common: the main idea should be to come up with a goal for the students to accomplish by the end of the lesson, to be aware of the amount of time each activity/part will take (while remaining flexible), and to provide a written record for future reference. Lesson plans should be relatively simple, flow smoothly, and be open to change depending on the effectiveness and enjoyableness of the students. Before starting the lesson, teachers should: have their lesson plan completed and in hand, have all aids and materials within arm's reach, have all the equipment tested and ready to go, seating arranged as desired, a clean board, and be ready to make small talk with students as they enter the classroom. Teachers should also plan anticipated problems with appropriate solutions to have as a backup plan in case something goes wrong. It's recommended that lesson plans have the following: date and time, class level, expected number of students, learner and teacher objectives, and potential student/teacher problems w/ direct solutions. They should also have the procedure, phase (ESA), amount of allocated time, and interaction (T-S or S-S) - An example can be seen on page 4 of the ITTT Unit 9 PFD. Overall, unit 9 was useful for learning how to plan and organize lessons using the previously learned ESA (Engage - Study - Activate) teaching model.
