Testing is a way of clear evaluation for students and teachers. Different tests include placement tests, used at the start of an EFL class to determine individual students' speaking, writing, reading, and listening level in English. Diagnostic tests are similar, also used by teachers as a marker to find out what the students' individual skills are and what they are looking for from the course. Information from placement tests can be use to group students into higher/lower levels or learning groups within a class. Information from diagnostic tests can be used to help teachers plan lessons and gain feedback from their class. A group discussion is another valuable way to gain feedback from a class. Throughout the class, periodic progress tests are a good way to evaluate and review what has been learned a few lessons at a time. It is best to allow students time to prepare, but it is generally up to the teacher how and when to administer progress tests. Many teachers use larger tests spaced out just a few times per class, perhaps a midterm and a final, while others use tests more frequently and cover less material in each one. The needs of the class can help a teacher decide how to test progress, but it is important to test progress and evaluate students' strengths or weaknesses in demonstrating English language skills. External English tests might be something a student or class is working towards, in which case practice tests are helpful to familiarize students with the format of the external English test and give a sense of what they will need to prepare.
