Teach English in QuanAn Zhen - Shaoguan Shi
Unit 20 is the final module of the course. It examines some of the common problems teachers may face in the classroom and possible solutions for managing them. The initial class is a time to set the tone for the remainder of the course. The teacher will need to establish rapport between the students and herself/himself. Teachers will also need to get to know the students and their needs, and their current language level. Some students may be at different levels which may pose problems for the teacher. In this case, the teacher may want to divide the students into different groups and use different materials for each group. Different tasks may also be utilized for the appropriate skill level. Large classes can definitely be problematic. In an effort to manage these classes well, teachers can use worksheets, pair/group work and choral repetition. Teachers can also maximize on the dynamics of a large class by being creative and spontaneous. Another problem that may present in the classroom is students wanting to use their native language. To minimize their desire to speak in their native tongue, activities should be skill appropriate and instructions and explanations must be clear. Reluctant students should be paired with other students and involved in role play. Listening is a fundamental skill for English learners and teachers should be deliberate in their methodology to help students to acquire this skill. Overall, most problems in the classroom can be overcome by good classroom management and structured activities suitable for each skill level.
