Teach English in Pingshi Zhen - Shaoguan Shi
The main focus in this unit was explaining the different methods of teaching. There are quite a few methods for teaching English as a second language. One such method is known as the Silent Way, in which the teacher says very little and uses colored rods called Cuisenaire rods. Each colored rod represents sounds or other aspect of the English language. The method of Audio-Lingualism, also known as the Army method, relies on long repetition drills. This method operates under the thought that habit formation through conditioning will result in better learning. Suggestopaedia, Grammar-translation, Task-based learning, and the Lexical approach were some of the other methods that were discussed. However, there was one method that was discussed with greater emphasis. ESA (Engage, study, Activate), is a method that focuses more on engaging and motivating the students and employs the use of elicitation. ESA also allows the teacher more flexibility than the other methods. The material of this unit was all new to me and because of this I found it very interesting. I learned much of the differing methods of teaching as well as their positive and negative effects they can have in both students and teachers. While there is still much to learn, the information in this unit was very informative and useful.
