Teach English in Longgui Zhen - Shaoguan Shi
This unit covered a range of teaching themes including: songs, chants, and music; games; stories; arts and crafts; and seasonal activities. Songs, chants, and music are fun and an effective memorization technique for younger learners and older students. For younger students, use rhymes and actions. For older students, songs can be used for activities other than singing. Games can be good warmer activities or adapted to each lesson. Good games include Monopoly, Pictionary, and hangman. Stories are useful in many ways: they can build vocabulary, be used with any level or age group, are motivating, are good for modeling writing styles, and can develop all four skills. The use of arts and crafts stimulates both sides of the brain simultaneously and can thus accelerate learning. It can incorporate all four skills as well after the art is completed. Seasonal activities may include: creating artwork or linking activities, reading about the origins of the seasonal event, creative writing, or listening to stories based around these times of the year. Maybe the most vital thing I learned from this unit (although it was only specified for games but I feel is a good rule of thumb across all activities) is that the lesson point should be considered first before the games or activities. Once the teacher has thought about what the students have just learned and what they need to practice, then thinking about adapting a game to fulfill these needs can follow. If the process is done the other way around, the students may not be able to effectively practice the lesson point.
