Course books usually need to be supplemented with outside material, which can either be authentic or created. Authentic materials are real, interesting, and can be matched with students? interests. Created materials are designed by the teacher and can be geared towards specific levels. Crosswords, gap fills and puzzles are examples of created material that can be customized with relevant vocabulary. Course books usually include a student text book, workbook, teachers book, and audio files. There are many advantages to using a course book: it saves preparation time, is already graded to a specific level, and provides structure for the class. Some disadvantages are that the course book can become predictable and boring, students might not like the style or content, and books are often outdated. I have experienced several of these problems with course books. In one book, the unit about technology was so old and irrelevant that it was embarrassing to go through the exercises. Many business course books are so boring that the students soon get very tired of them. Still, I find that using a course book is better than going without one. I agree that the book shouldn?t be used for the entire lesson. Bringing in a lot of supplemental material and choosing which units to cover is also important. Two new ideas are replacing and adapting material from the course book. If the teacher has the option to choose a course book, some of the factors to consider are: price, availability, design, skills and difficulty, methodology, topics, structure, and extra materials.
