Teach English in Leyuan Zhen - Shaoguan Shi
Unit 1 provides an overview of what is expected of a good teacher and what that teacher should expect of different types of students upon entering the classroom. Of the qualities listed in the lesson, the most important quality a teacher should have is to care about the students' learning above all else. Every 'good' quality listed in the lesson works towards making sure students are effectively learning the course material; in order for teachers to be properly motivated to teach, they must prioritize the learning of their students. This unit also discusses the different roles a teacher may take on in the classroom and the value of each role in the learning process. The second part of Unit 1 discusses the qualities of a good learner, the factors that affect the way a student learns, and the different language levels an ESL teacher may encounter. Understanding the qualities of a good learner is an important step in not only recognizing when a student is sufficiently motivated to learn, but also when this motivation is lacking, in which case the teacher should choose an appropriate method for motivating the student. In order to do this, the teacher should look at the different factors affecting how the student approaches learning, such as age, language level, learning/life experience, and culture, and decide which role or roles to take on in that particular situation. The entire second section of Unit 1, essentially, provides the necessary tools for empathizing with students in order to maintain the primary objective of the classroom: the learning of the students.
