Teach English in Lecheng Jiedao - Shaoguan Shi
This unit presented two different lessons, a poorly executed lesson and a well executed lesson, in order to provide an opportunity for students (such as myself) to put the information within previous units into practice and to see examples of good and bad teaching practices. This unit did not present new material, but compelled the student to apply previous units when watching and reflecting upon the two videos. I found this unit particularly helpful. With many of the previous units I struggled to visualize how different activities, principles, or habits would be acted out in the classroom. It's one thing to have an activity planned and another to execute it. It's one thing to understand the difference between engage, study, and activate, but it is another to teach a lesson involving these phases and to effectively transition between them. Although there have been sample lesson plans in previous units, it was helpful to see the difference between an effective and ineffective teacher and, drawing upon previous units, to be able to identify the ways in which the teacher was effective or ineffective. Writing a lesson plan for the second lesson was also a very helpful activity, because it forced me to articulate exactly how the teacher structured the class, transitioned between activities, and used elicitation to communicate vocabulary and grammar. I haven't ever taught English as a second language, or seen it taught for that matter, and this unit, with its two videos of an actual teacher and classroom of students, ultimately illuminated the material of previous units.
