This unit highlighted the similarities and differences between teaching children, and teaching business adults. There is a lot of crossover between teaching adults and children; such as presentation of information, giving earned praise, etc. First, each type of learner needs motivation, or some kind of challenge to stay active in class, otherwise boredom sets in, and it may be hard to get their attention back. Also, everyone likes to have their success acknowledged, whether child or adult, so when a teacher can complement, by giving notice of progress in something, it can make the student motivated to try hard often, because they know that the teacher notices what they do/the quality of their work. Some differences between the child-students and adult-students are: children can more easily absorb language material, because their minds are still developing and constantly taking in all the information around them. For adults, this is not the case, because they are already fully developed, and can choose what they want to learn. Another is the level of maturity, young students are still learning many other things, and so they can be forgetful of things like rules or homework, often. With business adults, this could happen, but more than not, they understand that they have to become better at English for their job, so they will tend to not have these problems often. Also, with adults, teachers can organize and plan goals based around student needs, because the students will not need an all-round general English education; they just need to learn special areas of interest.
