For me as an individual English teacher, the whole Unit was very useful. I haven't worked with large classes for long. The chapter gave me many ideas of class arrangement, in case I am entitled of teaching more than 2 students :) According to the material, a teacher is to find his/ her own style and be able to chane a role depending on activities. He/ she must know when to be firm and to leave students alone. The following aspects were mentioned: eye-contact, gestures, and voice. Usage recommendations were given. Students' names should be used in the end of instructions to keep them on alert. Pluses & minuses of grouping students were discussed (whole-class activities, students working on their own, pair-work, groupwork) Class arrangement was analyzed in detail (orderly rows, circles and horseshoes, separate tables). Teacher's position (standing, seated, and moving) was explained. Recommendations of writing on board were clearly given. The aspect of giving individual attention was highlighted. The issue of TTT was arosen and advice how to avoid unnecessary teacher's speaking time was given. Giving instructions was also one of the main points. Showing is more effective than telling :) When checking instructions, it's better to ask for back explanation. Establishing rapport was paid attention to. Discipline was one more important paragraph (factors, reasons for problem behaviour, prevention, and responding to it). A teacher should strike the correct balance between exrecise control and encouraging a relaxed, friendly atmosphere, conducive to learning.
