Teach English in Huangca Zhen - Shaoguan Shi
In this unit, various methodologies were discussed briefly before describing the ESA methodology, an approach which draws upon the best of those methodologies encountered previously. Next, elicitation was introduced as a key strategy; the three phases (engage, study, activate) of ESA were introduced; and examples of \"straight arrow,\" \"boomerang,\" and \"patchwork\" ESA lesson plans were provided. Examples of activities for each of the three stages were provided as well as tips for correction/feedback. Because I have not taught ESL, there was much in this unit that was new to me. The most valuable takeaway was the division of a lesson into three phases (albeit, phases which may be used more than once) and the different activities provided for each of the phases. Although I have encountered some of these activities in my own language learning (e.g. introduction prompts, partner sharing, etc.), there were many that were new or which I had forgotten of. For instance, while I recall \"story building\" and \"producing materials\" when I learned French in high school, I hadn't thought of employing this in the classroom in the future, a useful activity which can be used with a variety of ages and skill levels. This unit provided a nice starting point as I begin to consider how I can organize and construct lesson plans, what my priorities should be in each lesson, what types of activities to include, and how the roles of teacher and student are involved in each lesson. Because my knowledge of teaching in general and teaching ESL specifically is slim, there was much to learn here.
