Teach English in HongshAn Zhen - Shaoguan Shi
When faced with first lesson, an inexperience teacher should try to get to know their group of students, establish rapport, understanding their needs/aspirations with English, and level of English of each individual class member. There is a variety of short, fun and communicative activities, which would help breaking the ice amongst students, subsequently inspire and motivate them. When encounter learners with different capabilities and language skills, it is important to make sure that the stronger students, who excel in the classroom, don't take away from others. Students may sometimes have the tendency of using their native language to communicate something that they feel unable to express in. As an ESL teacher, it's important to have rules in place and to encourage students to use only English for their own benefits. When dealing with large classes the teachers can employ a number of techniques such as worksheets, pair/group work, clarity of voice, choral repetition, appoint group leaders for activities, and make use of the dynamics to their advantage. As with reluctant students, try to engage students during the lessons by using pair work, controlled practice, role-play or a tape recorder. One way or another, the reluctant students would feel less stressful and will be more comfortable to participate in the classroom. There will always be problems that come up in ESL lessons, but with a little forethought and flexibility, the teachers can handle almost anything. In order to be a great ESL teacher, one must not only teach, but also inspire and empower the students.
