This unit covered the different qualities and roles of both teacher and students in a English learning classroom. It also covered the different levels of language acquisition. The teacher has many roles to facilitate learning and the teacher should be comfortable in each role. Sometimes the teacher will need to be a manager in the class but also be willing to step back and let the students participate in group work. It is important for the teacher to encourage and motivate students by changing roles. Most important would be knowing what role to play that is in the best interest of the students and their learning. Students also have their qualities that best assist them in learning. It is very important for the students to be motivated, curious, willing to listen, willing to ask questions, accept correction, and a desire to learn. The unit also discussed different levels of language learning. These are important to know for the teacher so lesson plans can be adjusted for each level. If a lesson is too easy or too advanced, the students may become frustrated or bored. What I learned in this unit is that learning is a collaborative effort between the teacher and the students. Although the teacher is ultimately responsible for the lessons, the students have an obligation to participate as well. Both the teacher and the students have their responsibilities. If the teacher plans an activity but the students do not have a willingness to learn, the activity will fail. Conversely if the students are willing and motivated but the teacher is not, the class will not be successful.
