Teach English in DAnxia Jiedao - Shaoguan Shi
Unit Five covers different types of techniques and resources a teacher can utilize to to teach different types of \"contexts\" to their Business English students. For example, some of these techniques include looking at Case Studies to introduce new vocabulary and language structures, using the method of Frameworking to teach different types of descriptive sentences to study the language of change, and even using the computer and internet as a research based source where teachers can find a plethora of authentic materials while students can practice their reading and writing skills. Besides these useful tips and techniques, from this Unit I've learned about the Speech Act Theory as well as the Total Physical Response (TPR) but feel that the TPR theory was more insightful. For instance, the TPR theory, credited to Dr. James J. Asher, is based upon the way that children interact both physically and verbally between their parents. The child responds to a parents verbal cue, ex. \"Give me the cup\" or \"Say 'aaaah' \" and responds physically, which the parent then reinforces through more verbal cues. Asher observed that through these interactions, even though the child cannot speak yet they are taking in verbal cues through their listening skills and that speech will develop naturally and spontaneously on it's own. I feel that this was the most useful to learn about in this unit because it is another different way to approach teaching a group of L2 students, one that might be able to produce more natural speech than perhaps teaching through a book or other written types of material.
