Teach English in ChengjiAng Zhen - Shaoguan Shi
Unit 19 discusses tips, strategies, and expectations for teaching specific types of groups. It covers teaching beginners (adult beginners, young beginners, false beginners, absolute beginners, etc.), teaching individuals, teaching children, and teaching English for business or for specific purposes. As I anticipate that I will be teaching children, I paid the most attention to suggestions for tailoring my lessons to a younger, potentially less experienced crowd. It was helpful to consider that children develop a sense of self esteem through positive reinforcement; it will be crucial to deliver praise and encouragement and avoid over-correction or criticism. The advice about maintaining an aesthetically pleasing physical space and seeking interesting, varied, and lively lesson material (to help retain students? attention) was also helpful. When it comes to the subject of discipline, I think the following sentence is most important to remember: ?The behavior and attitude of the teacher is perhaps the single most important factor in a classroom and can thus have a major effect on discipline.? Having been a rowdy student myself, I know this to be true. I respected teachers who showed me respect and who challenged me in a firm but encouraging way. Unit 19 also features a sample needs analysis, which will prove a valuable resource in whatever classroom I may find myself. I found it a very helpful way to conceptualize my first days as a teacher ? to put myself in a position of learning, first, about my students and then determine what and how I can teach them.
