This unit covered student evaluation and testing. Evaluation is a process which is put in place for several reasons such as tracking student progress, diagnosing misunderstandings or misnomers and tailoring future course content, giving students their individual feedback, placing students into correct streams and formally assessing students' language levels to name a few. Correctly and overtly evaluating students is considered a positive as it lets the individuals know how they are progressing and can even help the teacher in developing future content. Evaluation can be conducted through tests or through things like tutorials, questionnaires, guided discussions, surveys etc. Diagnostic tests are those used to test the class as a whole and check for their understanding on a given concept. These can be used to confirm if there are general errors being made by the class and consequently, content can be created to assist in fixing these errors. Placement tests are used by some schools when students commence and depending on results, the students will be placed in particular classes. Progress tests are tests which can be employed periodically and perhaps with little or no weighting toward the students' formal assessment but are there to let the students know how they are progressing. External exams are generally for formal language certification and are usually conducted outside of language schools. There exist a number of different and popular external exams such as general international ones such as IELTS to the more specific Cambridge ones such as Skills for Life or Business English.
