Teach English in Xingang Jiedao - Shanwei Shi
In this chapter the learning materials used by the students is discussed. Authentic materials include items such as menus, newspapers, movies, songs, magazines, etc. These are useful because they are authentic to the native speaker and thus are true examples of what everyday English speakers read or listen to. Authentic material can motivate students more because they can relate to the subject matter and it is important that the students have an interest in what they are studying. Created materials are made by the teaches by hand or computer generated and the teacher cuts out the images. Examples include crossword puzzles, gap-fill exercises, flashcards, word searches, and role-play cards. The teacher can plan any type of ESA lesson with both authentic and created materials. Course books include a text book for students, as well as a workbook, and a teacher's book. Some also come provided with a DVD or CD with extra activities included. Course books are helpful to the teacher in that they provide a syllabus guide, offers progression throughout the course, normally has a balanced mix of grammar and vocabulary work, and the teacher's book offers ideas for a new teacher to try. Students may dislike using course books because it lacks interests to all class members, the exercises may be boring, the teacher may become lazy and rely too much on the book, and the book can dictate what is being taught instead of leaving room for the teacher to be more creative. It is important to not always rely on using the course book, but instead look at the needs of the students and adjust the lesson from there.
