Classroom Management has been a daily part of my life for the last thirteen years. As a teacher of younger students, I acknowledge the importance of being prepared, spending time on setting up the classroom environment beforehand and keeping learning interesting, fun and varied. Students can become easily bored and this can lead to potential behavioural problems. I strongly agree with giving clear instructions and the need to check that students have understood the task in hand. I always ensure my students repeat the step by step instructions I have given before embarking on their activities. Finding out about their interests and opinions is also key. Students are immediately engaged if the lesson material relates to them. I liked the idea of substituting a characters name with one of the students and actually did this with a maths test for six and seven year olds. This made a huge impact on my students level of motivation and focus. Discipline will vary depending on the culture, circumstance and age of the students. At the beginning of an academic year, I always create 'Classroom Agreements' together with my students. This gives them ownership and I find they are more willing to respect each agreement as well as being more accepting of their fault should they fail to obey. I hope to use this in EFL too. Because of my teaching experience, I found this unit to be less challenging. However, having said that, I was inspired by the idea of using students names at the end of a question. I will now go forth and use this technique on Monday Morning, addressing the passive students in my group.
