The unit focuses on the teacher and the learner. The characteristics of a good teacher and the different roles teachers adopt during a typical lesson. It also looks at the language learners and the characteristics of a good learner and what has an influence on the characteristics such as age, culture, life experience, motivation. It also covers the language levels of language learners. In general, a good teacher cares about his/her teaching but cares more about the learning of the students. There are nine characteristics of a good teacher mentioned in this unit, three of which focus on the personality of the teacher such as his/ her patience, kindness, passion to teach and knowledge of the subject. The other five characteristics focus on the teacher student relationship. A good teacher motivates, encourages, interacts, helps and involves all the students. The role a teacher adopts during a typical lesson depends on the activity and what the teacher wishes the students to learn. A teacher can adopt the roles of a controller, observer, assessor, prompter and a participant depending on the stages of the lesson. The teacher has to understand how to switch between the roles. There are several factors that have a bearing on what we perceive to be a good learner such as age, life experience, motivation for learning, cultural and first language. Motivated students are more likely to be successful than unmotivated students. It is very important for the teacher to keep the motivation in motivated students and spark motivation in unmotivated students by creating a fun interesting learrning experience.
