This unit seemed to touch on some grammar points that many students tend to have trouble with. Modal auxiliary verbs are interesting because of the slight differences in meaning they have between each other. For example, \"can\" and \"may\" can both be used to ask permission, but \"may\" is considered more formal. While I do think we can elucidate some of these differences for our students, I think that a large amount of language input in the form of reading and listening will help students most with understanding the slight differences in connotation between these words. Telling them the how \"will\" is more certain than \"might\" is good, but having them understand it through reading and listening will probably make it most clear and relevant. Phrasal verbs threw me for a loop for a little while. I eventually figured out (as it touched on in the text) that if you rearrange a sentence so that the object can fit between the verb and the article, then it's separable, as in, \"you can separate these words and it still means the same thing.\" However, if these object cannot fit between the verb and article, then it's inseparable. Perhaps this should have been more obvious to me, but I eventually got a grasp of it. The relative clauses seemed pretty straightforward. Basically, if the section giving more information about a noun is sectioned off by commas, you can guess that it's a non-defining clause. It can be removed and the meaning of the sentences will stay the same. Overall, I found the phrasal verbs most difficult to grasp, but I think I can make sense of all of the material covered in this unit, now.
