Most of the concepts in this unit about managing classes are straightforward enough and rely mainly on common sense. But for common sense to be available we must remain focused at all times. We must enjoy teaching and enjoy seeing progress in our students. With these factors in mind, we naturally adapt and flow from one teaching method and management technique to another. However, it is sometimes difficult to keep one's cool when a/a few students are continually unruly, to the point of preventing group progress and/or completion of tasks set. It would be nice to have a few more tips on how to deal with such students, especially as my school is a small and private institution with no colleagues to lean on for help and advice. The code of conduct has never been written as I'm the only teacher and I tend to have faith in my sense of fairness. However there has been the odd occasion where I've been surpassed by an emotional response to a child acting up. I would like to learn some more concrete examples of how to avoid this in the future. One new thing that has been reenforced in this unit, is the teaching position. I do tend to be seated and in a relaxed environment amongst my students. However, there are times when I do not place enough distance when students are undertaking individual/group work. I've learned the importance of providing more albeit simple instructions at the beginning of a task as opposed to continually providing help and assistance during a task. Note to self, revise methods of reducing my talk time. Revise delivery of instrcuctions. Learn to remove myself from the centre of the activity.
