When it comes to teaching a new language, there are 3 important things to keep in mind, as mentioned in this unit. As I have learnt them, I will explain and summarize it. First would be: teaching vocabulary. Like I have learnt from this unit, how easy or difficult it would be for students to learn a vocabulary item, would depend on: The similarity to the students own language as well as the English words they already know, spelling and pronunciation and appropriacy. When selecting vocabulary to teach, I need to pay attention to the appropriacy to the students and the task. I should also look at the frequency, coverage and teach ability. But what the students need to know more about the chosen vocabulary would be the meaning, usage, word grammar, interaction, spelling and pronunciation. Typical techniques to use would be, miming, using pictures and discovery with the engage stage. for the study stage, activities like: gap-fills and word searches. Discussions and role playing for the activate stage. The second is introducing grammatical structures. Again that which is important for students to know is the meaning, usage, forms, patterns as well as the spoken and written form. Techniques that could be used to teach language structures for the engage stage is: using pictures, questions and answers. For the study stage it would be: to look at the language in context, gap fills and sentence building. Techniques for the activate stage is for example, using communicating games and building stories. The last that is important to teach is the language functions. When using it for suggestions, inviting and agreeing.
