Teach English in FengshAn Jiedao - Shanwei Shi
The differences between the two lessons are clear in that it is easy to see why students react to the teacher in the ways that they do. The ineffective use of the ESA method in the first video coupled with the lack of enthusiasm from the teacher, drives the interest from the students down. Without a proper Engage stage the students will not want to get involved and may have reservations about the class or teacher as well as inhibitions about attempting to speak in class. Without proper direction from the teacher during the Study phase the students may not have a clear and concise idea about their lesson. The lack of understanding in the lesson will further alienate the students from their English learning. The second video also shows just how important and effective building a good rapport with the students can be. There is a definite improvement in the classroom atmosphere that was not present in the first video, and the students respond well to this by participating well and using the language structures provided by the teacher both confidently and effectively. I also noticed that the teacher was more willing to allow the students to experiment with the language in the Activate stage by allowing the students to communicate freely while using the language that had been learnt in previous stages. He allowed them to communicate with a focus on fluency rather than accuracy and any mistakes that were made were gently dealt with. Overall I feel that the most important difference between the two videos is in the relationship that was built between the teacher and the students to provide a good platform for learning.
